Weekend Backpack Programs
in Monongalia County

What is the
Weekend Backpack Program?

Weekend backpack food programs help provide nutritious, non-perishable, and easy-to-prepare food to elementary students to help them avoid hunger over the weekend from food insecurity when they cannot depend on school cafeteria meals.

The first weekend backpack programs were initiated in 1995 by a school nurse, who noticed students coming to her on Mondays complaining of stomach aches and headaches. She realized many of those students were eating little to no food over the weekend. The backpack programs in Monongalia County are primarily administered by area churches.
